Spiritual Thought: Doctrine & Covenants 1:24

In Doctrine and Covenants 1:24, we learn that the Lord uses “language” (language, experiences, culture) to speak to us in a way that we can understand so he can teach us. Humans have first and second languages, and while some people are more proficient in their second language, the majority of us know our first language. The words we use are influenced by those around us, we can see that in the slang from area to area, and even from generation to generation.

Because of the many factors that influence our language, such as family, location, experiences, education, teachers, disabilities, age/generations, and so forth, it is hard for everyone to know exactly what everyone else means when they speak. As an example of slang, when I was in high school and students called things “lit” that meant that it was cool. My teacher told us that when he was our age, it meant that they were under the influence.

The Lord is no different in needing to adjust to our understanding. If He spoke to me in Dutch, I wouldn’t understand him. How am I supposed to learn His lessons if I don’t know what he is saying?

I think it is very comforting that He is willing to adjust to ensure we learn His lessons, because it shows His kindness. We don’t have to be perfect to understand Him, we just need to be willing to listen.

Hear Him.
