Knowing My Audience

As a writer, I need to know who my audience is. If you’re reading this, it looks like you’re part of my audience! Just knowing that you are reading this post isn’t enough, however. I need to know who you are and what you have experienced and what you want with your life. Things like your gender, age, job type, income, hobbies, even religion are important details. They allow me to curate my content to meet in the middle between what I want to share and what you want to read.

It also helps me choose the right words, language, and references. Based on your age/generation, which of these words or phrases do you recognize?

  • “Lit”
  • “The Game”
  • 8-Track
  • MP4 file
  • “Emulator”
  • “What’s your 20?”
  • “Cap”
  • “Ick”
  • “Shadowban”
  • Yuppies
  • Rotary Phone

There’s more examples but you get the idea! Writers need to use references that their audience will understand, because if there are too many unknown references that they need to search up and define, that can turn people away from being interested in your content.

It also helps me determine what kind of content I should put out. When my audience is middle class, stay at home wives/girlfriends with an interest in meditation and physical wellness, they likely wouldn’t read a blog post about company controversy or the uses of mathematics. Instead, they would be interested in content about mindfulness, recipes, and that knowledge helps me tailor content that relates to that.

Finally, knowing my audience helps me making content that they feel resonates with them, helping them commit to my blog or content.

Happy writing!
