As authors, we have both feature writing and news writing.
Now what the heck is that?
News writing is just what it sounds like. Your job is to share information and news accurately, objectively, and focused on the story. It’s also super time sensitive; you have to post about it while it’s still relevant and as it is getting searched for.
Feature writing is more of an in-depth writing that looks more into a topic, person or even an issue. The goal is to have more emotion and storytelling. It’s the opposite of news writing. We can publish it pretty much whenever. You can have it be more of a story, focus on the human aspects and interests as opposed to only facts, and lack emotion. It can start with a scene, a story, a quote, and not just with facts. There’s more potential for creativity.
In my opinion, if you couldn’t tell, is feature writing has more strengths than news writing. It’s more memorable and can be so much more engaging. Humans have a tendency to remember things we’re told if they’re said alongside a story; it’s hardwired into our brains. It can also give readers a deeper understanding, since you’re able to go more into the details and emotions than you can in a news writing. It does have weaknesses, though. It’s not ideal for urgent information. It takes longer to write and to read, because it isn’t just simple facts and has to be understood. It also takes a bit more skill to develop, because you have to be a bit more entertaining.
Regardless of that, both forms of writing are very important and should be greatly appreciated.
Happy writing!
